Analyse the choice of shot type, angle, movement and composition.
Screen shot at least 5 different scenes and explain the choices made and their effects.
Divergent Choosing Ceremony Clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=klGMA7PHWhw
Throughout this clip there are many different types of shot types, camera angles, camera movement and different compositions. Many range from pans from the pov of the main character, Beatrice (who later changes her name to Tris), or just a pan of something that is generally quite important for the specific scene.
Screenshot 1:
Just before this Beatrice was previously shown similar to from an eye level shot and frame wise a single shot. From this we would not make any judgements or anything of the type of character she is from it being an eye level shot but where its also a single shot it could show the isolation that she feels with having to make a choice she feels is right for her as she cannot be offered help from her family. With the pan it also wasn't so clear and not so focus so its like a state of confusion that shes feeling as it seems to be from her pov. But with this picture its the same eye level and single shot but this time rather than her looking around the whole of the hub at all the different factions she's just looking directly at, and ends up choosing, dauntless. After this shot of her it then pans to show you dauntless and the type of people they are like, but to me they don't seem how they act further on in the film as they don't give of their normal protective, security like vibe but more of a calm and cool vibe. Which kind of makes us feel like she's wanting to be apart of their faction.Screenshot 2:
Here we've got a low angle, medium long shot of Jeanine. She is also the only character within this whole screenshot to be completely clear and visible. The low angle with the medium long shot with the other character behind her but not in focus shows her superiority and her power with being in focus and above and more important than anyone else. The medium long shot helps to show Jeanine's confidence which is seen throughout not only through her posture and the way the camera angles have presented her but through her speech and when she speaks to Beatrice and her family.

This is a screenshot from when Beatrice and Jeanine are having a conversation. The camera angle used here is an over the shoulder shot from over Jeanine's shoulder which then presents Beatrice from a high angle too which presents her as weak and vulnerable which could be because shes younger or it could be to juxtapose the way that she had previously looked specifically at dauntless who are strong and because she wants to be apart of that she now has to be presented as weak to show who she really is in other peoples eyes. And when there is an over the shoulder shot from over Beatrice's shoulder Jeanine is then presented at seen again at a low angle to show who's older which would therefore show that she has more authority then Beatrice. Screenshot 4:
Here we have a low angle, mid shot of Marcus. Later on in the film we find out what type of man he was and how poorly he treated his son who then changed faction to have nothing more to do with him not only this but Marcus is also the leader of abnegation as well as the city council leader. The low angle presents his authority over the whole of the city and all of the factions. Not only the low angle can help us to understand the type of person he is and present him in this way the mid shot can show his confidence and you can tell by his posture and the way that he's stood and his hand actions that he is confident and knows what he's talking about.Screenshot 5:
Here it the camera changes its focus from being clearly focused on Beatrice to then being clearly on abnegation and her parents mostly in focus compared to the others who are less in focus. The focus pull would show how the family reacts when they find out both of the prior children leave to go somewhere else and could be seen as them being horrified as who knows what could happen now since Andrew Prior, Beatrice's dad, works very close with Marcus so may be scared that what has happened may cause them some backlash. Another thing that may seem odd is although you've got Beatrice who is a blur as the focus is all on her parents and abnegation they would have been looking down on her but with where the focus has been pulled they now look lower and less significant because of Beatrice's choice. This also shows a crowd shot which would suggest that the anger or sadness that Beatrice's parents must be feeling they are not feeling alone as all the others are presented in the same way and at the same time as the Prior's.
Excellent analysis Rebekah, well done! Strong identification of the camerawork and explanation of its effects.
